Common AI Server Chips and Procurement Checks

An AI server purchasing list extends beyond GPUs. The challenge is confirming whether each device, module or card fits the intended platform. Start with the approved system architecture and BOM, then check technical compatibility and supply conditions in parallel.
1. Six device groups to identify
| Group | Role | Procurement checks |
|---|---|---|
| CPU, GPU and AI accelerators | General-purpose computing, training and inference | Platform, card or module format, cooling and software support |
| Memory and storage | Working data, models and persistent datasets | Memory type, capacity, speed, module format and platform validation |
| High-speed interconnect and networking | Connections between compute, storage and network resources | Interface generation, lanes, protocols, firmware and signal conditions |
| Power management and power devices | Conversion, distribution, protection and monitoring | Input range, load and thermal conditions, protection and external components |
| Management and monitoring | Board management, temperature and status collection | Interfaces, firmware integration, measurement and alarm requirements |
| Clock, interface and supporting devices | Timing, expansion, isolation and peripheral functions | Timing limits, protocol, logic levels, package and operating temperature |
This grouping is a purchasing framework, not a universal server architecture. The approved platform design and manufacturer documents determine the actual component list.
2. Distinguish HBM, system memory and SSDs
HBM, DDR5 system memory and data-center SSDs serve different purposes. Micron describes HBM for accelerator bandwidth, DDR5 for server memory workloads and SSDs for access to datasets and models. Similar capacity does not make these products interchangeable.
First establish whether the requested item is a bare IC, a memory module or a complete SSD. HBM is normally part of an accelerator packaging and platform solution, rather than a conventional plug-in memory module. Server memory requires checks of module type, supported configurations and platform qualification. SSD selection also involves interface, form factor, endurance and firmware.
3. Evaluate power devices under real operating conditions
The power chain may include multiphase controllers, power stages, DC/DC converters, hot-swap controllers and current-sensing devices. TI's server design resources address conversion, protection and monitoring together; its 48V server reference design illustrates input power-path protection using a hot-swap controller.
Separate recommended operating conditions from absolute maximum ratings. Current capability depends on cooling, the PCB and external components. Matching packages alone does not establish compatibility: protection thresholds, start-up sequencing and control behavior may differ.
4. Match interconnect parts to their network role
NICs, DPUs, switching devices and PCIe retimers can perform different jobs in an AI server. NVIDIA reference architectures distinguish compute networking from management and storage networking. Procurement should follow that intended role, rather than comparing a single bandwidth figure.
Engineering should specify interface generation, lanes, protocols and firmware. A substitution in a high-speed path also requires review of the PCB, connectors, cables and signal-integrity validation. A similar series name is not a compatibility guarantee.
5. Record five items before ordering
- Complete orderable number: include manufacturer, suffix, package, grade and packaging.
- Platform and revision: identify the board, card or module and required hardware and firmware versions.
- Quantity and delivery plan: separate samples, pilot builds and production, and confirm staged delivery and quote validity.
- Source and acceptance: agree packaging, lot information, available traceability, inspection and exception handling.
- Substitution limits: define whether alternatives may be evaluated and require engineering approval before switching.
Enquiry checklist: manufacturer / full part number / device or module format / quantity / target platform / required delivery / packaging and lot requirements / inspection requirements / permitted alternative evaluation.
Procurement takeaway
Evaluate performance, platform fit and supply conditions together. Identify version restrictions and unresolved items before requesting quotations or samples. Application guidance cannot replace the exact datasheet, platform qualification list or engineering approval.
Send the full manufacturer part number, quantity, required delivery, packaging and inspection requirements. Stock, pricing and delivery are confirmed for each enquiry.
